Sawyer Petrick is a screen and television writer based in New York City. He worked on film and television scripts with Whole Picture Films. Sawyer Petrick also completed multiple screenplays as a film student at The New School.

The Black List was established in 2004 as a survey of Hollywood's most interesting and well-reviewed unproduced screenplays. Scripts in the survey come from all writers, from established Hollywood writers to film school students. The survey polls studio leaders and executives from independent production companies, who do not necessarily name the highest quality scripts available, but those generating the most buzz.

For nearly two decades, approximately 440 of the more than 1,000 scripts featured on the Black List have ultimately been produced for the screen. A few of the most notable Black List screenplays were turned into the films Argo, American Hustle, Juno, The King's Speech, and Slumdog Millionaire, to name only a few. These pictures have grossed a combined $30 billion and over 500 major awards.

More recent Black List films include Air, which tells how Nike signed Michael Jordan, and Challengers, a Zendaya-led romantic sports comedy.
